Detroit and surrounding area shopping
Posted: Sep 19, 2006 7:37 PM

My friend and I are looking to go on a shopping weekend either next month or in November.  We are looking for the best malls, outlets/discount stores, etc. to check out.  Any advice? TIA!

where are you coming from (where do you live?)?

I suggest Sommerset Collection as well as Downtown Birmingham, very cute shops! I used to work at Sommerset and it is the greatest mall there are a lot of new stores like a huge Antropoligie. I also heard that a new H&M opened near Lakeside mall. There is also a nice shopping outdoor mall in Rochester Hills that is not too far from Troy, you could do both, althougth it has everything that is at Sommerset. There is a new IKEA near Canton if you are looking for home decor. I sometimes like to go to Great Lakes Crossing to hit the outlets, but only if I am in a mood to dig for bargins, the Neiman Marcus Last Call is good and so is the Saks Fifth Avenue. Have fun! I moved away from Troy two years ago and really miss it, I still drive over there to shop!!

I would try to hit the Birch Run outlet mall, located off I-75, near Frankenmuth. I always stop at the BCBG outlet when I'm going through there. They also have a Coach outlet, Nine West, Ann Taylor, and heaps of other stores. I always check out their map online, see if any of the stores are having sales, and then plan where I'm going ahead of time, because the mall is huge.

If I only have a few minutes, I always hit BCBG- they've been having some good sales lately, and I stocked up on dresses and wraps this summer.

O, and you might want to check out MDOT's lane closure webpage, to see if there's going to be any traffic problems on your way done- lane closures, detours, etc. It's www.michigan.gov/laneclosures.

Happy shopping!

All of your ideas are great.  What about TJMaxx and Marshall's in the area?  Are there any and if so, are they as good as the ads?  Can I find good designer stuff there?  Also, where would you recommend staying, where should I avoid?  When is the best time to plan this trip?

Are you planning on going to the Metro Detroit area? Also, what types of things are you shopping for, and what is your price range?

Somerset is a huge mall- check the listing of stores online. If you're looking for a good mix of stores like Express, Victoria's Secret, etc, as well as some higher-end department stores, this is a good bet.

I would certainly try TJ Maxx and Marshalls- they're two of my favourites! It's really hit or miss, depending on what stock they have in that week. Definitely check out the shoes, purses, and sunglasses- yesterday I saw Michael Kors sunglasses for $20, and have seen Dooney bags for $100.

I would also try Loehmanns- it's like TJ Maxx, but they carry higher-end merchandise. I would recomend going on their website first, if you can, and joining their frequent shopping program. It doesn't cost anything, and you'll receive lots of coupons via email and snailmail.

I would recomend planning your trip sometime this fall, before the bad weather gets here. Try www.tripadvisor.com to check out any hotels you're thinking about staying at. I usually find pretty honest reviewd, and I like to read what other people write about the hotel before I book there.

Good luck, and have a great trip!

Birch Run outlet mall

Somerset-also Loehmann's and Nordstrom Rack just down Big Beaver (16 mile rd.) and there is a TJ Maxx, Old Navy, and Marshalls on John R Rd.

Lakeside and surrounding area-Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, etc. among others

Have a great time!

All of these are the best suggestion, especially since you are coming from UP down i-75.  You'll hit Birch Run 1st, then Great Lake Crossing, both good outlet malls. Troy area is next on Big Beaver Rd (Somerset Mall (upscale and the best Mall Detroit has to offer).  The best Target is near there also on Coolidge.   Lohmans and Nordstorm Rack are on Big Beaver heading East.  Go over to Birmingham for nice quaint shops (not too far from Troy).  Wrap it up with, Hall Rd (M-59) is a must see, everything else is there: Lakeside Mall (Lord and Taylors, H&M inside the mall), plus T Maxx, Marshall, DSW, etc. all on 1 mile stretch of stores.  That covers everything.

I am mainly looking for clothes and shoes (real specific, huh?   ).  I am looking for updating and expanding my entire wardrobe, in different sections, dress and casual.  I am looking for cute casual tops, some tops for work, some cute skirts and tops to go with them and cute shoes for dress and work.  I don't plan on getting a whole wardrobe, as I will have a limited budget, but just enough for a few outfits and extra pieces to add some variety to it.

Thank you all for these fabulous suggestions!  They are sure to make the trip worthwhile.

hillsami, thank you for recomming loehmann's.  I completely forgot about it.  Is their frequent shopper thing an offer for a credit card?

The Loehmann's card is just a frequent shopper card- NOT a credit card. I'd try to sign up before you go, they'll send you coupons via snail and email, and that could save you money.

There are lots of hotels in that surrounding area, so you should have lots of options.

Can you recommend some cheaper hotels in the surrounding area that are clean and not in a rough area?  My friend and I would like to save as much money on rooming and food as possible so we have more to spend on the important stuff (clothes, shoes, makeup!)!

Also, how is the VS outlet store.  I love their bras and panties.  Can you find good deals at their outlets?  Are the prices much less?  What can I expect to find?  Would it be better going to the outlet store rather than the one in the mall?
