White BEFORE Easter

Is that old standard that you can't wear white until after Easter still true?

I don't wear much white to begin with, but I have a cream blazer that I'll wait until like April (or a freaky hot March to wear). My white skirt I'll wait until April... Yeah I guess April is the perfect month to start wearing white. Then there is "winter white".... Whatever!

Actually I haven't heard that you can't wear white until after Easter--just that you can't wear white SHOES after Labor (with no date for when you can resume).  I think it's appropriate to wear white--including white shoes--any time of year.  I was excited when the weather got cold just so I could buy a faux-fur white chubby and white mukluk boots.

Those rules, whatever they are, are pretty much obsolete.  Of course, one wouldn't wear a white eyelet lace strapless dress in December; but one could wear a white sweater dress in December.  As long as the fabrics are relevant to the season at-hand, then white is generally okay.

I dislike that rule...how long has it been around and who invented it?  I think you can wear white whenever you want to, just dress appropriately for the season.

I think the idea of not wearing white after Labor Day & not again until Easter had more to do with the seasons. I'm sure we've all noticed how strange the past couple of years have been, it's almost like all the seasons have moved up a month and a half....Anyways.....as it got colder, rainier & muddier, it was very impractical way back in the day to wear white when you had dirt streets to trudge through, REAL chores to do & the inclimate weather would surely mess up your clothes in a horse and carriage or walking through a wild west town. With so many modern conviences & a more open interpretation of ideas & ways of thinking than the tradition steeped 1950's, white can look striking any season, echoing Polly & Maggie, in seasonally appropriate fabrics.

GOOD POINT!  I never thought about it like that.

Thank you to everyone who replied.  Now I can feel confident when I break out my new pair of white denim capris this weekend!

That old rule was actually no white until Memorial Day (in May), not Easter.  But, I agree that's pretty crazy and kind of like not being able to wear black to a wedding - now everyone does it.  I think probably no white shoes/sandals before April - but may depend on where you are in the country.  FL weather is certainly different that Boston in March/April!

I think if you where white...but it goes with the entire ensemble, is not over powering and you feel confident you are fine any day of the year.

White is a very distinctive look....and can really make a fashion statement and get you noticed.

Every girl should have a white skirt....it adds more to your look rather than just a white top that some times washes out your complexion.

well I think that rule is very outdated. It depends on the weather , where you live , what you plan to wear etc.

If you want to wear it and it looks good and is appropriate - I say GO FOR IT!

The whole rule about not wearing white before Memorial Day and after Labor Day is VERY Southern. The farther south you go and the older the woman is, the more likely a lady is to adhere to the rule. And it really applies to accessories too. White leather purses, shoes and belts look odd when you walk outside and it's the frozen tundra.

I bought a gorgeous off-white leather tote and I'm waiting for Memorial day before I wear it (I grew up in the South, can you tell?)!
