The great closet clean out has begun!
Posted: Nov 1, 2009 11:23 AM

On Friday night my cousin came over and we kicked off the great closet clean out! I started with shoes and accessories and got rid of half of my shoes and a lot of accessories. I still haven't really honed in on what I want, I just know what I don't want. I know this sounds silly, but I feel slightly sad and liberated at the same time.

I feel like I'm finally letting go of my college self and really embracing adult hood and all that I've accomplished in the last 5 years.

We're taking this one step at a time, so next will either be tops or bottoms in a week or so.

It feels good to be making room for new things to take me into my next stages of life

you sound just like my mom.

Shes like its time to let go of some mid teen stuff. And some of the clothes form your sibs.

Its time to embrace womanhood and adult hood.

Although, I dont think i am ready to give up juniors clothes just yet

GG, your mom is pushing it. You're still in high school, what does she think you should be wearing?

I dont know. I think she wants me to update things

I got stuff in there from when I was 14-15 and stuff.

Moms are a hard area to understand at times.

My thinkning is some of my stuff dont fit or what not.

Thats the only thing ,I can think of

Yay! Congrats on the beginning of the clean out!

I understand the liberated part. Where is the sad part coming from?

GG- you should get rid of the stuff that doesn't fit from when you were 14-15. No sense in hanging on to that stuff.

Hardi- a little sad because those days were good days (but not that these days aren't good days) and those old good days are gone. Just a little longing for the days crazy college parties and entry level positions

There is a lot of that going around.  A friend and I were waxing nostalgic over the undergrad days of not caring about professional reputations and being a bit more irresponsible.

But I like my life better now

Congrats! I feel a sense of sadness when I start getting rid of things, too. Just because there are memories tied with all that stuff. But usually, once it's out of my sight, I'm over it. It's just pushing myself to get to that point that's the hardest - so good job!

I *thought* I had responded to this earlier.... wonder if the forum ate my message....

ANYWAY, WOO HOO for a closet clean out!  I can tell you firsthand that it feels WONDERFUL.  I did reduce what was in my closet and dress by about 80%, and most of the items I kept have been altered.  (The ones that have yet to be altered are on the sewing board for the spring.)

Someone mentioned getting rid of clothes with negative emotions.  Oh my gosh... that was surprisingly hard, but it was worth it.  I had several semi-expensive pieces that were tied to a negative life event (ie: my favorite-at-the-time eggplant purple wool jacket... I was wearing it when I was told my BC diagnosis.), and I had developed a love-hate relationship with them.  But now that they are GONE.... *sigh of relief*

Just keep at it, removing things a little at a time.  I'm still working on jewelry, scarves, and other accessories.

I'm done! I got rid of 4 garbage bags of clothes yesterday, but for some reason my closet still doesn't look that empty...
